Introduction to VoIP and Gradwell:
VoIP – Internet Telephony, is a means of making phone calls over the internet. It is commonly used by IT professionals and increasingly home and small business users. VoIP is rapidly becoming a huge phenomenon, as demonstrated by the success of US provider Vonage, and the 2.6 Billion dollar purchase of Skype, a popular internet calling service, by EBay, the online auction website.

A pioneer of VoIP in the UK, Peter Gradwell co-founded the IP industry’s trade association ITSPA, chaired Nominet’s Policy Board and in 2006 became the British Computer Society’s youngest-ever Fellow. The BCS recently celebrated its 50th Birthday.

His company Gradwell dot com (www.gradwell.com ) is a Top 3 provider of VoIP to SMEs and has won several commendations in the DTI-Interforum eCommerce awards.

Among the company’s recent joint-venture innovations is the Camrivox Flexor 500, providing a feature-rich VoIP service with the ability to message through Outlook.

Portability of existing numbers to the Gradwell service was introduced in 2006, along with the offer of a comprehensive range of “golden numbers”, giving receivers of callers the perception of, for example, calls coming from a London location even though they are being made (and received) overseas, or outside the capital in any chosen UK dwelling/office.

In addition, Gradwell offers a VoIP service for Nokia e-Series business mobiles.

Readers of Net interested in reading Peter Gradwell’s book on VoIP, called Introducing VoIP, should contact Jack Ozanne 07973 770942; published under the aegis of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) Introducing VoIP offers a practical guide to all VoIP options available in the UK to the end of 2006.

It identifies potential benefits to businesses and individuals from a range of perspectives. It is available from the ICAEW’s Faculty of Information Technology - under the latter’s Chartech publication banner - for £12.50 plus postage.
