Globalization Institute - VoIP and Hosting

The Globalization Institute - an independent, non-profit research institution - publishes reports and commentary on the world economy and international development. The Institute’s work is regularly featured on television programmes such as BBC’s Newsnight, Sky News, CNBC and Channel Four News, and is read by institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, United Nations, the UK’s Department for International Development and the European Commission.

Led and founded by Alex Singleton, it has four staff in London who commission from and collaborate with a network of leading experts around the world.

Analysis and history of Gradwell’s service

The Institute adopted Gradwell’s Developer Account and Voice over IP Centrex, plus a Gradwell fax-to-email account.

“I first learned about Gradwell in an internet magazine - it was highly rated for its uptime. I had previously been hosting some sites on a dedicated Linux server but I wanted a supplier with better support and reliability,” says Alex Singleton.

“Unlike many web hosts, Gradwell gives customers a really powerful control panel, giving you control that normally would require a dedicated server.”

“Hosting with Gradwell is perfect because on days when we’re in the news, if we get a huge spike in readers, our site can cope.”

“Gradwell’s “soft limits” policy - where a site isn’t cut-off because it has used too much bandwidth - is really important and gives us peace of mind,” says Alex.

“Because I’m the person who “knows about websites”, I find myself giving advice to other research institutes in London, and I always recommend Gradwell. I moved the Adam Smith Institute - my former employer - across to Gradwell, and am currently bringing the Institute of Economic Affairs (also based in London) across too.”

“Before I was in economic research, I worked freelance for computer magazines such as Personal Computer World and ComputerActive.”

Additional comment:

“One of the great things I like about Gradwell is that its staff reply to e-mail; I’ve never found a web hoster which consistently deals with technical questions as efficiently as Gradwell, and that’s essential. The sites I’m running on Gradwell are database-intensive, content-managed sites, sites that would not run - or not run very well - on bottom-of-the-range web space.”

“On the occasions when I’ve not been able to get something working, Gradwell has been excellent at helping me,” says Alex.
